Website Design Tips for Ottawa Photographers: How to Turn Your Portfolio Into a Client Experience

The photography industry has changed a lot over the last decade. Long gone are the days where someone would only find a photographer through a Google search or a referral from a friend. Nowadays, many Ottawa photographers are building their businesses online, relying on platforms such as: Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest.

As a creative business owner, I get it. Social media has completely changed the way we market our businesses and making it easier than ever to get discovered. A couple planning their wedding can stumble across your work in seconds, get a glimpse into your personality, and start imagining what it would feel like to have you behind the camera.

But being discovered is only the first step.

At some point, someone moves from, “I love their work,” to “I think I want to hire them.”

When they’re ready to make that investment, they’re looking for more than a collection of beautiful images. They want to understand your experience, your approach, what makes your work different, and what it will actually feel like to work with you.

That’s where your website becomes such an important part of the experience.

Your website gives you the space to tell the bigger story behind your business beyond just the images you take. It can showcase your approach, your process, your personality, and what makes working with you different from the hundreds of other photographers someone could find online. After all, you can only say so much in nine little boxes on a grid.

So in this post, I’m sharing website design tips for Ottawa photographers who are ready to turn their website from a simple online portfolio into a strategic client experience tool. We’ll talk about choosing the right platform, creating content that continues working for your business, and finding simple ways to elevate your client experience long after someone first discovers your work.

Let’s dive in!

The Biggest Misconception: “As long as I have a website, that’s enough.”

Ironically, one of the biggest misconceptions I see isn’t that photographers don’t have a website.

I mean, you are smart enough to know you need one if you’re running a business. The challenge I see is that many photographers view their website as a box to check rather than a tool that can actively support and grow their business.

Let me explain more what I mean.

For many photographers, a website tends to become a static portfolio. You launch it, swap out a few galleries every once in a while, maybe update your pricing, and that’s about it. It quietly sits in the background while you invest more time and energy creating content for Instagram. After all, it’s way more fun and interactive connecting to a real audience compared to a boring website.

Sounds about right?

But let me play devil’s advocate for a second. Because I truly believe your website has so much more potential than that.

Your website can answer the questions your clients ask before they ever hit “send” on an inquiry. It can educate them about your process, help them prepare for their session, share your expertise through blog posts, and create a seamless experience that extends far beyond your portfolio.

Every page has the opportunity to build trust, strengthen your brand, and help someone feel more confident about choosing you.

When you use your website intentionally, it becomes more than just a portfolio, it becomes the foundation that connects your marketing, your client experience, and the way people move through your business.

How Your Website Can Become The Heart of Your Client Experience

So what does this actually look like in practice?

When I talk about using your website as more than a portfolio, I’m not suggesting you need to create dozens of pages just for the sake of having more content.

The magic happens when you start thinking about your website as a resource hub: a place that supports your clients at the exact moment they need the information most.

For example, as a family portrait photographer – just think about every question you answer repeatedly in your business.

“What should we wear for our session?”
“How do we prepare our kids for family photos?”
“What happens on the day of our shoot?”
“When do we get our photos?”

These questions are opportunities to create a better client experience and your website can become the place where those answers live.

Let’s walk through what this could look like for a portrait photographer.

Someone discovers your work through Instagram, a referral, or Google and lands on your website. They browse your portfolio, learn about your approach, and start imagining what it would feel like to work with you.

This is also where your website can help answer questions before someone ever reaches out.

Maybe someone asks if you’ve photographed at a specific location before, or if you’ve worked with a certain type of session. Instead of scrolling through Instagram trying to find the perfect example (and hoping they don’t get distracted by a random reel halfway through cause we’ve all been there, done that), you can send them directly to a blog post or gallery on your website.

“Actually, I recently photographed a family session at that location. Here’s a full blog post so you can see what the experience looked like.”

Not only does this help answer their question, but it keeps them engaged with your brand, your website, and your work.

Once someone inquires, your website can continue reaffirming that decision that you’re the best person for them.

You can create hidden pages on your website like investment guides, client wardrobes, and session guide to help clients understand your process and feel more confident moving forward.

Because booking a photographer is personal. People aren’t just choosing someone who takes beautiful photos — they’re choosing someone they trust to capture meaningful moments in their lives.

Once someone officially becomes a client, your website can continue supporting the experience.

Instead of sending an old school PDF welcome guide that gets downloaded once and buried somewhere in their inbox, you can create a hidden client page they can bookmark and revisit throughout the process.

This could include:

  • your welcome guide
  • what to expect during their session
  • wardrobe inspiration
  • preparation tips
  • location recommendations
  • frequently asked questions

Then, as their session gets closer, you can continue guiding them with helpful resources. Maybe a few weeks before their shoot, you send them a “what to wear” guide. A week before, you share tips for preparing their children. After their session, you can direct them to resources about selecting prints and sharing their gallery.

Guess what? Your website can support the relationship even after the final gallery is delivered!

For family photographers especially, this creates opportunities to stay connected beyond a single session. You can create seasonal resources, holiday card order forms, or special offers that make it easier for past clients to return year after year.

And the best part? These resources don’t disappear after one client uses them, they can continue working for your business long after you create them.

Unlike social media content that quickly gets buried in your feed after a week, these pages continue working behind the scenes. A blog post about preparing for family photos or a session guide can be repurposed into social media content while also helping improve your SEO by giving Google more context about your expertise and creating more opportunities for potential clients to find you.

Your CRM can still handle the logistics such as: contracts, scheduling, emails, and payments. But your website can become the resource hub and marketing funnel that enhances the experience and brings clients back to your brand at the right moments.

Choosing The Right Platform for Your Photography Website

Once you start thinking about your website as more than a portfolio, the next question becomes: “Do I need to pay for another platform outside of Pixieset?”

I completely understand why photographers love all-in-one platforms like Pixieset. You’re already using it for gallery delivery, so having your website, client galleries, and workflow tools connected in one place can feel simple and convenient, especially when you’re newer in business and trying to keep your monthly expenses manageable.

However, as your business grows, you may start wanting more from your website. Maybe you want to create educational blog content, build client resources, showcase your expertise, improve your SEO, or create a more intentional brand experience that feels different from simply browsing through galleries.

In my opinion, this is where a more design-focused platform like Showit can be a great fit!

I love Showit because it gives photographers more flexibility to create a website that feels like an extension of their brand. You have more control over the design, layout, and overall experience, while still having access to WordPress integration for blogging and building out SEO-friendly content.

At the end of the day, the best platform is the one that supports where your business is today while giving you room to grow into the business you’re building. Cost will always be a factor, but I encourage you to also think about where you want your business to be a few years from now. Remember, your website should support the direction you’re heading, not just where you are today.

Final Thoughts: Your website Is An Investment In The Future of Your Business

At the end of the day, your website doesn’t need to replace Instagram, TikTok, or any other platform you use to market your photography business.

Those platforms are still valuable. They help people discover your work, follow along with your journey, and get a glimpse into your personality.

But your website gives you something those platforms don’t: a place you own where you can intentionally guide someone through the experience of working with you.

For photographers, your work is already deeply personal. You’re not just delivering images; you’re capturing milestones, memories, and moments people will look back on for years. Your website should reflect that same level of thoughtfulness.

At the end of the day, these small touchpoints are what make clients remember how it felt to work with you. Because years from now, they might not remember every email you sent or every detail of the process, but they will remember whether they felt cared for, prepared, and confident throughout the experience.

So if you’re looking at your website right now and wondering whether it could be doing more, start small.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my website clearly communicate who I work with and what makes my experience different?
  • Am I answering the questions my clients ask me over and over again?
  • Do I have resources that make my clients feel more prepared and confident?
  • Does my website reflect where my business is today and where I want it to go?

Your website doesn’t need to become overwhelming or complicated. But with the right strategy, it can become the hardest-working employee of your business helping you educate clients, build trust, and create a better experience behind the scenes.

If you’re an Ottawa photographer looking for a website that reflects your brand, supports your client experience, and helps your business grow, I’d love to connect!
