The Misconception About Niching Down In Marketing

Branding

Let’s talk about something that causes way more stress than it should: niching down 🙃

If you’re a multi-passionate business owner, you’ve probably heard the phrase “you need to niche down” more times than you can count. And maybe every time, it triggers a mini identity crisis.

Probably because the traditional idea of niching where we have to pick one specific industry or audience and sticking to it forever can feel incredibly limiting. (Been there, felt that)

What if you love working with wellness coaches and photographers (hi, it’s me)? Or what happens if you are a therapist who truly want to help as many people as you can? And what if you’re still figuring it out and the thought of choosing one thing makes your brain short-circuit?

Here’s a semi-hot take: niching down doesn’t have to mean boxing yourself in.

There’s more than one way to build a focused, memorable brand… AND you don’t have to give up your flexibility, creativity, or multi-passionate spirit to do it!

The Biggest Myth About Niching Down

Let’s bust a big one right out of the gate:
“If I niche down, people outside of that niche won’t reach out.”

False. So, so false.

People will still reach out—if they’re drawn to your energy, your work, and your point of view! Even if you market yourself as a copywriter for photographers, you’ll still get inquiries from coaches, designers, and therapists who love your writing style.

Why? Because people want what they want.

A strong brand doesn’t repel everyone outside your niche. It attracts people who resonate with you, whether or not they fit the label. That’s the beauty of showing up as a whole, layered human.

Niching Down ≠ Choosing One Industry

Another big misconception about niching is that it’s always about industry (which I totally get).

But if you’re multi-passionate and love working with different types of people, that traditional approach can feel a little limiting. And you know what? It’s not the only way.

So let’s flip the script and explore how to niche without niching, at least not in the traditional sense 😅

Instead of asking “what industry do I serve?”, try asking:

  • What tools or platforms do I specialize in?
  • What type of energy or vibe do I bring to my work?
  • What kind of people do I vibe with (even across industries)?
  • What are the values or beliefs that guide my business?
  • What’s my unique working style or approach?
  • What content themes do I love creating around?
  • What lifestyle do I connect with (CEO moms, digital nomads, neurodivergent creatives)?

Creative (and Non-Traditional) Ways to Niche Down

If the industry-first model isn’t for you like how it wasn’t for me, here are a few more ideas to get you thinking:

1. Niche by Tool

Do you have a platform you love? You can position yourself as the go-to person for Flodesk email marketing, Notion templates, Honeybook CRM, or Squarespace SEO, even if your clients are all across the board.

2. Niche by Working Style

Are you a high-touch partner who loves deep, collaborative projects… or are you a minimalist strategist who builds lean systems? Your approach can be your niche!

3. Niche by Lifestyle

Maybe you connect most with clients who are moms building businesses during nap time. Or creatives working a 9-5 and growing their business after hours. Shared seasons = instant connection!

4. Niche by Personality or Energy

Are you quirky and playful? Grounded and calming? Bold and edgy? When people vibe with your energy, they remember you, even if they don’t technically “fit” your niche.

5. Niche by Beliefs or Values

If your brand stands for sustainability, inclusivity, rest, mental health, or creativity over hustle, those beliefs become the bridge that connects you to like-hearted clients.

6. Niche by Signature Style

Whether it’s a design aesthetic, writing voice, or creative approach — if your work has a recognizable signature, that is a niche. I know, it’s THAT simple.

Why Multi-Passionate Entrepreneurs Still Need a Niche (Kind Of)

Even if you don’t want to choose one industry, you still need a clear message. You still need direction. You still need to answer the “what do you do?” question with some level of confidence and clarity so that whoever is on the other side understand exactly how you can help them.

This is where building a personal brand comes in.

When your brand is rooted in who you are, not just what you do, you give yourself room to evolve. You give people something to connect with that transcends your offers or your audience.

Your personal brand becomes the throughline, whether you’re offering six different services, launching a course, or coaching clients for a variety of industries.

It’s your voice, your values, and your perspective that matters.

Clarity Doesn’t Have to Mean Constraint

If you are still not convinced… reframe niching down from “pick one thing forever” to “create enough clarity that your dream clients know you’re the one for them.”

It’s about having a focus—not a fence.

Cause realistically speaking, you don’t need to limit your creativity or your capacity to evolve. You just need to be clear enough in your message that it clicks for the right people.

So, How Do You Niche Down Without Losing Yourself?

Great question! Here’s a roadmap to get you started:

  1. Audit your favorite projects. What did they have in common? (Not just the industry—think deeper: values, style, vibe, workflow, personality fit.)
  2. Define your personal brand anchors. What do you stand for? What’s your tone of voice? What experience do you create?
  3. Choose your creative container. Instead of a niche industry, pick a niche lens—like your signature style, your approach, or your tool of choice.
  4. Keep your messaging focused. Speak directly to the kind of person you love working with, even if they’re in different industries.
  5. Let your body of work evolve. Your niche will get clearer with time. Give yourself space to figure it out as you go! PS: you can change it anytime!
